The BOD Framework
The BOD Framework: A Tool for Task Initiation
If you've ever sat down to start something — and found yourself completely unable to begin, despite knowing exactly what you need to do — you're not alone, and you're not broken. Your nervous system is sending you a signal.
I developed the BOD framework to help ADHDers and other neurodivergent individuals identify why a task feels impossible to start, and to match that reason with a strategy that actually works — rather than relying on willpower or self-criticism.
BOD stands for three common barriers to getting started:
Boring — the task doesn't engage your interest-based nervous system
Overwhelming — too many steps, unclear starting point, or cognitive overload
Demanding — internal or external pressure (the "shoulds") triggers resistance, often tied to autonomy needs or burnout protection
The acronym doubles as a prompt to check in with your BODy — many people notice physical sensations (tension, heaviness, racing energy) before they're consciously aware of why they're stuck. (Body awareness isn't required to use this framework — if that's not accessible right now, you can jump straight to identifying the barrier.)
Each barrier comes with its own set of practical strategies, from the well-known PINCH method for boredom to specific reframes for demand-related avoidance.

I use this framework regularly in session with clients, and wanted to make it available as a free resource. If you're a clinician and would like to use this with your own clients, feel free — just please keep the attribution intact.
